Natalia, who sent me alkanet root, sent me also a lipstick that is of course colored with alkanet :) You can read about her lipsticks here. The color is nice and rich, and you can see it on the lips, but the color is not too strong to use at work. Actually the lipstick is very shiny and it smells like monoï oil. Natalia´s lipstick feels like a luxury product that I almost don´t dare to use...
Now when I have alkanet root, I surly want to make some alkanet lipsticks to both myself and probably some guinea pigs. I looked again from the wonderful world of the internet for similar lipstick recipes and I found a few that were familiar, but forgotten a long time ago. And I found one that looked simple and I would have similar ingredients at home. The recipe is from Fresh Picked Beauty.
Omaan huulipunaan laitoin:
14 g manteliöljyä johon olin uuttanut alkannaa
7 g kaakaovoita
10 g mehiläisvahaa
3 tippaa E-vitamiiniöljyä
20 tippaa piparminttun eteeristä öljyä
I put in my lipstick:
14 g alkanet infused almond oil
7 g cocoa butter
10 g beeswax
3 drops vitamin E oil
20 drops peppermin essential oil
From this batch I got two small jars and 3 tubes of lipstick. Sadly the color is much lighter than Natalia´s and FPB´s vesions, even though the almond oil was very dark. Now I´m planning to double infuse the almond oil so I will get a darker color. I tried also to make this lipstick with jojoba wax, but it was too soft and it melted too fast. That is a shame because I bought it specially for lip balms. You know, because everybody can´t use beeswax.

Wow, you made it already!
VastaaPoistaThe problem with alkanet is that the longer infused, the stronger the color!
I like the color you got, it's very soft, but I do understand that you wanted something darker. The next one will be stronger :)
I know Natalia that I was in a hurry, but I thought that I would get a nice color if I would infuse alkanet in a double boiler. I just have to wait a month or so and try again. At least I have a nice light lip balm I can use.
PoistaWow, what a great color! I never would have thought you could get that beautiful berry color from alkanet root...I'm going to have to try this!
VastaaPoistaI like that color too, but is should be a little bit darker as a lipstick. It gives a really beautiful shine. Just like lipgloss.
PoistaAs soon as I get my flavour that I ordered for lip balms, and why not, lipstick, I' m gonna try this. Now that I have alkanet, I mustn't miss this opportunity out!
VastaaPoistaI like both very much, you could have put some on your hand and take a photo, so we could see better how they really look like on the skin! Anyway, it's amazing colour!
Btw, you can use candelilla wax in place of bees wax, it will make hard your lip balm!
I was also thinking of flavor oils like cherry and strawberry, but for the next batch. I forgot to take hand pictures! My lipstick has a very sheer color and I want much stronger colored lipstick.
PoistaAnd you know what: maybe beet root can be used as colorant here! It's not good for CP, but for lip balm just could work!
PoistaHave been looking for beet root powder. I guess fresh beet root is no good :)
PoistaYou can dry it yourself and afterwards, infuse the oil. You don't necessarily need powder, just dried slices. I dried some last year, but tossed it away later, by accident!
PoistaOH, what a great idea! You will probably guess what my next project is... ;)
Poistapretty color! I need to add alkanet root to my list :)
VastaaPoistaThanks :) Soon everybody has alkanet root lipsticks :D
PoistaI think that you obtained very good color taking into consideration that you used alkanet for the first time! I am sure that your future alkanet lipstick would be just in line with your expectations!
VastaaPoistaThanks :) I should just learn how to wait for a great color, but I also like this one.
PoistaWow, what a great color you got from the alkanet root! That sounds like a really nice recipe, too. Thanks for sharing!
VastaaPoistaNatural colors are amazing :) I don´t think you could get as nice colors with micas.
PoistaThank you for sharing your recipe! The color looks really nice to me. You and Natalia's post are making me curious about making my own lipstick too. :-)
VastaaPoistaIt is just that the color should be darker that it looks also good on your lips. Especially if you have naturally dark lips as I do.
PoistaAfter I have started to use homemade lip balm and lipstick, I feel that my lips are so much healthier and softer, and they do not need as much moisture as before.
