Kookosöljysaippua - Coconut oil soap

Olen viime aikoina lukenut monista blogeista saippuoista joissa on pelkästään kookosöljyä.
Lately I´ve been reading from several blogs about soap that contain only coconut oil. And no, it is not to drying if you remember to superfat your soap with a high enough %. The coconut oil itself is not drying, but is is very cleaning. I read about many different superfatting %, but the most common was 15-18 %. I pondered for a week if I could put 20 % superfat and when Kenna from Amathia Soapworks posted her coconut oil soap with 20 % superfat I knew I could try it.

I wanted to use something else than water as liquid, but I did not know what. I wanted a white soap so tea, aloe juice, buttermilk etc. was not an option. It sounded so weird to put coconut milk in coconut oil soap, so I did not do it even if it would stay white. You should remember that coconut oil is one of the oils that makes the soap hard. So this soap will be hard as a rock in 6 to 12 hours. If you want to use a loaf mold it would be best to test the soaps hardness every 30 minutes, so you can cut it before it gets to hard.

Hyvin yksinkertainen ohje :)

427 g kookosöljyä

162 g vettä
62 g lipeää

Käytin kahta eri tuoksuöljyä, Appelsiinisorbettia sekä Kirsikkapiirakkaa. Yhden pienen saippuan jätin ilman tuoksua, koska halusin nähdä miten kauniin valkoisen saippuan saisin.

A very simple recipe :)

427 g coconut oil

162 g water
62 g lye

I used two different fragrance oils: Orange Sorbet and Cherry Pie. I also left one little soap without any fragrance, because I wanted to see how white the soap would be. I just love white soap! Isn´t it strange that I can make multicolor soaps and I still choose a soap with one oil and no color.

Ylhäällä vasemmalla tuoksuton, takana oikealla appelsiinisorbetti ja edessä kirsikkapiirakka. On the back left is a unscented soap, on the right Orange Sorbet and in the front Cherry Pie.
Appelsiinisorbetti-tuoksuöljy käyttäytyi ihan hyvin. Siinähän on voimakas jässähtämistaipumus. Sain kuitenkin saippuan kaadettua ihan nätisti muotteihin.
The Orange Sorbet FO behaved nicely even if it speeds trace. The Cherry Pie FO discolored the soap yellow, so I put a little bit of titanium dioxide. I like the light yellow color. But it was a surprise that the Cherry Pie FO made the soap very hot and it was sweating a bit. I put a towel on the soap because I was hoping it would gel, but I did not get a full gel even if the soap was hot for several hours. But it was very hard and I could have unmold the small soaps after 3 hours. The only soap with no FO was at this time still soft, but much harder than other soaps I´ve made.

Tässä on muuten jotain minun yhtä seuraavaa projektia varten. Mutta siitä hieman myöhemmin. / Here is something for my next project. But more about that later.

  4. The only 100% coconut oil soap I make is the laundry soap with 18% superfat. It's lovely to use after 6 months!
Love your molds, I know you will like your bars :)

    1. This was new information for me, laundry soap with 18% superfat. I thought that it should be 1-2% so the excess oils don´t make the clothes oily and make them smell. Do you put Borax in your laundry soap?

  5. I've read about this recipe and I would like to hear your thoughts, once it's fully cured. They look great,I wish I could smell them. Also,I share your oppinion about laundry soap, I would say SF should be reduced for the cleansing power of coconut oil!
I see you have organic goats milk there, ready to go to some new soap! Am I right?

    2. Yes,I know,I had it translated, but didn't think it was a big deal. I always get my goats milk row and use it like that for soaps. Do you think it should be boiled first?

    3. It is a big deal to me :D This was the first time that I found Finnish goat milk. And I love the fact that it is raw and organic. It is so difficult to find goat milk in Finland if you don´t have goats yourself or a friend of yours have. If you have good luck you can find one brand of goat milk that has been imported from a German speaking country. It does not even say what country :D

I love 100%/20% coconut oil soap, it gets better and better as it cures but is even great right out of the mold. :)

  7. I am also watching to see what you think of these as they age and are used...I keep wanting to be brave enough to give this one a try...but I am not there yet :) Do you have any goat farms/breeders online where you could "make friends" and get milk? Just wondering - I know we do that here some...tricky thing in the U.S. to sell raw milk...the food police will try to get you here!

  9. Lovely soaps, Marika! I have read that 100% coconut oil soap with a 20% superfat is very nice. I have been meaning to try an all-coconut oil soap, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I did make some salt bars with 80% coconut oil and a 20% superfat and they are very nice.
