Mustia ruusuja - Black roses

This is the first version of a ordinary tar soap, but not the last. I was so excited of the pine tar shampoo and the scent of it that I had to find more tar and I did find tar that was ment for horses. The packade said natural tar, but what a dissapointment. This tar smells so bad. Like a mixture of ash and ciggarets. And the color was not what I hade hoped for. I had expected to get a beautiful brown soap, but this had a strange black color. This tar was easy to use because it was liquid and it was in a bottle, but there was all the good properites. Afterwards I was thinking that it would have been good to use a fragrance oil, but I did not have a earthy fo that would have suited this soap. Originally I had thought that this soap would have been nice for sensitive skin and that is why I did not think about adding any fragrance or essential oils.

200 g oliiviöljyä olive oil
150 g kookosöljyä coconut oil
100 g riisinleseöljyä rice bran oil
50 g tervaa tar

190 g vettä water
66 g lipeää lye

2 rkl kehäkukan kuivattuja terälehtiä jauhettuna 2 tablespoons dried ground calendula petals
1 rkl kermaa 2 tablespoons cream

Onneksi minulla on taas kunnon tervaa jotta voin tehdä lisää saippuaa.
This soap behaved totally different when soaping if I compare with the soap with real tar. I watched several soaping videos about making pine tar soap and I asked about experiences other soapers have and everybody said that pine tar soap reaches trace very fast nd you should not use a stick blender. I mixed the soap for a long time but it did not reach trace. Then I mixed with the stick blender and it took a long time before the soap reached thin trace. I put the soap in the oven and was a bit excited of what kind of soap this will be. There was no problem and the soap went through all the HP stages. The soap was littel over one hour in the oven. I added the calendula petals and cream in the cooled soap and the soap was easy to pour in the mold even it the soap was quite thick. I got 6 large and 3 small soaps. Luckily have now proper pine tar so I can make more soap.

  1. Onpa kauniita!

  2. I quit up making tar soap, due to my concerns about the way it is produced. There might be a cancerous substance called creosote,if the tar was produced in open kiln. Not knowing how mine was made,I just quit up.
Why do you like it? Can you specify what it's good for? I couldn't stand the smell.
The roses are so dramatically gorgeous !

    1. I think real tar smells good. Yes I have heard of creosote but the lather stays on your skin for seconds. You will probably get more carsinogens from barbaqued or fried food that stays in your body for days. And how about other cosmetics people use. I like my tar shampoo becsuse my scalp is less itchy and it is said that tar is good for skin conditions like psoriasis.

    2. I hear you, Marika and you're right. My initial desire was to test it with people with psoriasis. Then I found out about possible cancerous ingredient in tar and aborted the process. When you sell, then you want to be sure your soap is, harmless.
I don't judge others, (soapmakers or producers of other goods) ,it's just my personal decision to stop making it. And I wanted to make sure you've known about the controversy on pine tar. It's also your personal choice what you will use.
      Hope you understand .

    3. Sure I understand :) If I would sell soap I would probably not sell pine tar soap, but I like it a lot and I will continue using it.

  3. I haven't made pine tar soaps for ages, and I still have a lot of pine tar...maybe already expired ;)
I was also sceptical about making the pine soap and I undersand the concerns about it, but still this soap seems to work so good on problematic skins...
Your soap looks so good, Marika!

    1. I also understand if somebody does not want to use/make pine tar soap, but I will still keep making and using it. There is so many onther things that people should be concearned about considering cancer.
      Thank you Nat :)

  6. Kiitos mahtavasta sivustosta, joka on niin täynnä ihania ohjeita :) Oli pakko lähteä kysymään, että kuinka pian itse tehdyt saippuat voi/pitää pakata muoviin vai pitääkö niitä edes pakata muoviin? Aurinkoista kesää :) Miirma

    1. Kiitos😊 Minä en itse asiassa pakkaa muoviin vaan säilytän pimeässä, ilmamassa ja viileässä paikassa.
