200 :)

Tämä on aika huikeata. Kahdessadas blogipostaus puolessatoista vuodessa. Eikä tämä saippuahullutus ole laantunut yhtään! Kyllä, olen vieläkin saippuaholisti.
This is quite huge. Two hundred blog posts in one and a half years. And this soap madness still continues! Yes, I am still a soapaholic.

Even though it has been a little bit quieter here in my blog, I have made five soaps in a week. This is one of them, my soap that is colored with alkanet root. I have not found any alkanet here in Finland and it is super expensive to order from abroad. But a very friendly and generous Natalia sent me a biiig bag of alkanet root, so now I can make several soaps :) Thank you Natalia!

Alkanna käyttö on mielstäni hyvin mielenkiintoinen juttu.
Using alkanet root is a very interesting thing. It wakes my inner chemist :D I read several several stories about using alkanet root before I tried it. Alkanet colors the soap grey, blue or purple depending on what the pH value is when the soap is cured. I also read that the color can be orange red if you use yellow oils and butters. Somebody had also written that the soap becomes more purple if the superfatting percentage is higher and different colorless oils gives a different shade of purple. And of course gelling also effects how dark the color gets.

Uutin alkannajuuren silpun oliiviöljyyn muutaman päivän ajan ja öljyn väri oli kauniin tumman punaista. Saippuan tein hyvin yksinkertaisella ohjeella.
I infused the alkanet root in olive oil for a few days and the color was a very beautiful dark red. I made a very simple soap with 30 % coconut oil, 57% olive oil (1/3 infused oil, 2/3 ordinary olive oil), 10% cocoa butter and 3 % castor oil. I added 2 teaspoons of bentonite clay to the oils before I added the lye water. The top layer contains also titanium dioxide and the soap balls are also colored with alkanet root. This soap smells like Liquorice FO. The fragrance oil did not behave this time and the soap became tick really fast. Earlier I have not had any problems with this FO.

Kuvissa saippua on noin vuorokauden ikäisenä.
It was very interesting to see when the burgundy red oils changed to dark gray when I poured the lye water. When I mixed the soap it became blue and the top layer was a very pretty light blue. At that point I just crossed my fingers and hoped for purple soap. In these pictures the soap is about a day old. 12 hours after making the soap, the blue soap had turned gray. But as you can see from the pictures that the color is changing to purple.

  1. Beautiful soap, Marika! I have not played with alkanet, but I hear that it is a very interesting ingredient to work with. The color you got is lovely, and I like those round embeds!

On these photos, I can see gray (in the 1th one), blue (2nd) and purple (3rd), what is soooo interesting! Anyway, it's beautiful and I like the idea of inserting balls, they really pop!
Btw, Nat sent me some alkanet, also, I just still haven't made any soap with it! I wonder what my luck will be like with the purpleness!

    1. Thanks Maja :) One relative asked me if I still like making soap and then it hit me. There has not been a single day that I have wanted to quit or thought that soap making would be boring.
I also love the changing colors and I had to take photos now so I could compare the soap colors to when the soaps have cured. And it will be a challenge to get these beautiful blue colors Natalia gets. But that is the fun part.

    1. Thanks Roxana :)
I love trying out new natural colorants, even if it is much easier to get vibrant colors with micas and pigments.

  5. Happy 200th post! It's great to hear that even after one and a half years, you are still passionate about making soap. I have not tried it myself, but alkanet seems to be such an intriguing additive. The last photo does show that it is turning purple. I hope that it becomes the color you are looking for. The embeds are a really nice touch.

    2. Miekin kiitän (teitä molempia, vilkaisin Tetri Designin valikoimaa ja pitää kyllä heti tilata kokeiluun vaikka mitä, mitä nuo ameriikan siskot aina käyttävät omissa saippuoissaan. :D

  7. Oh, you were quick, Marika! Nice to know you got such a nice color only after some days of infusing. Keep your soap in a dark place to make sure the color lasts. Can't wait to see your other alkanet soaps!

Congratulations on your 200th post, it's always a pleasure to read you!

    1. Thanks again Natalia :) I was so exited that I just had to try them. I put the soaps in a box so they can cure there, but every morning and evening I´m looking at my "small babies".

    1. Thanks :) This has been a fun journey to make all this soap and other stuff.
I was so nervous if I would get a grey soap or not. Especially when I red about your alkanet soap that turned grey when you added the infused alkanet.
